The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) provides legal protections for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, for those living in federally subsidized housing.

Under Missouri and federal law, a landlord cannot discriminate against a tenant because of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or religion. The City of St. Louis prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and source of income.

A new Missouri law enacted in 2019 protects applicants and tenants from being denied tenancy, being evicted from rental property, or being found in violation of a lease agreement, on the basis of the applicant or tenant being a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
